How to be ‘Cyber Secure’ as a Small Business

by | Feb 28, 2018 | Archived Articles

We are no strangers to cyber-crime, whether it be in the form of a suspicious email telling you to transfer money into an unknown account or a full-blown attack against your systems – there is no one that hasn’t been faced with some level of cyber-criminal activity.

For large enterprises such as Virgin or Google, they have the disposable revenue that allows them to invest in top of the line anti-virus systems and have teams dedicated to the protection of their data and processes to keep them safe. But for those that don’t fit within the 1% – how can you ensure the safety of your business, without breaking the bank?

Don’t panic! There are plenty of cost affective and even free ways that you can protect your business from falling victim to these attacks, to name a few;

Make sure you have a safety net

One of the most common forms of cyber-crime is a hacker breaking into your system and holding your business-critical data hostage, making it impossible for your business to function until you pay them to release the data back to you. By having a reliable back-up solution in place, you can rest easy knowing that if your data is compromised – you’ll be able to reboot to your last full back up, causing minimal business down time.

Know your weaknesses

Every business is in some way vulnerable to a cyber-attack, but the best way to protect yourself from this is to make sure you’re not caught off guard. If you know where the vulnerabilities are within your business you will be able to put solutions in place to protect yourself in the event of an attack.

Keep your Anti-Virus up to date

As cyber-crime becomes more intelligent, luckily so do the anti-virus systems that are designed to protect against them. However, they become useless if they aren’t kept up to date. Every patch that is released by your Anti-Virus provider has been created with the intention of fixing a vulnerability that would otherwise leave you open to attack. So as annoy as it might be to wait for the update to install, it’s worth it!

Educate your team!

It’s free, it’s affective and it’s necessary! 75% of all cyber-attacks begin with human error, whether that be a member of staff clicking on a Phishing email or bringing in a device from outside the company that isn’t secure. If you ensure that the people within your business are aware of how cybercrime occurs and how to avoid it – it will drastically reduce your chances of falling victim.
