Our take on the Microsoft Surface Pro 4

Following the launch of Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4, Complete I.T.’s Technical Director, Simon Bell, takes a closer look.

On October the 6th, Microsoft had a lot of exciting news around its hardware offerings, one of the most anticipated was the Surface Pro 4 running Microsoft Windows 10.

Due in the UK on November the 12th, The Surface Pro 4 will be more expensive than its predecessors at launch starting at £749.

If you compared the Surface Pro 4 next to the Surface Pro 3, it would be difficult to see what was different between the 2 models but upon closer inspection there are a number of significant changes.

The screen has gone up in size to 12.3in (from 12in) thanks to a thinner bezel. The resolution though has been significantly increased to 2736×1834 resulting in a very clear crisp display.

The Surface Pro 4 is also lighter, weighing in at 766g for the Intel M3 processor entry level model, whilst the i5 and i7 Models weigh in at 786g.

The rear facing camera has been upgraded to 8 Megapixels whilst the front facing camera remains at 5 megapixels.

Microsoft did state in the launch event that new Surface Pro 4 would have a 1TB disk option, sadly that option will not be available in the UK and we will have to be content with the maximum of 512GB.

Surface Pen and Type Cover

The Surface Pro 4 comes with the Surface Pen stylus and this has also been improved. It now comes in different colours, and supports interchangeable tips and has 1,024 levels of pressure. The eraser button on the end can not only erase but the button will also open Microsoft OneNote and activate Cortana and can now be attached with magnets to the tablet.

The new Pro 4 Type Cover isn’t included as usual but you should really budget for it and the new Type Cover is a huge improvement, the keys are more spaced out and have more depth for a comfortable typing experience and the trackpad is 40% larger, and works this time round.

The Type Cover and Pen are also backwards compatible to the Surface Pro 3 which is great news if you want to extend the life of your Surface Pro 3.
