The end of the line for desk phones as we know them?

A new era of communication

The rise of smartphones has led to a fall in voice – some research indicates that almost a quarter of smartphone users no longer use them to make voice calls, instead relying on the abundance of instant messaging services that are now out there. When was the last time you phoned your friend to arrange a night out? It almost seems as alien as having to go down to Blockbuster to pick a film as opposed to scrolling aimlessly on Netflix for half an hour…

Digital transformation within the workplace and the rise of one stop communication systems like Skype and Slack have had a huge impact on the way in which your average worker now communicates. The rise of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies also continue to have an effect on communication methods, with employees becoming accustomed to being able to communicate on the move, much like they do in their lives outside of the office. The logic behind this shift to a BYOD policy comes from the view of ‘if pretty much all of the team have smartphones, why can’t they use them at work too?’.

Some benefits of a BYOD policy include less infrastructure cost for organisations, as well as the ease of accessing communication apps like Skype and Slack outside of the office. These benefits have seen a rise in the usage of ‘soft phones’ within the workplace, but there are also some risks that should be considered. These risks centre around the security of your organisation. With a BYOD policy you risk the loss of control and visibility of company data that is being processed on your employees personal devices. This could lead to data leakage and possible fines under the GDPR, which of course are never ideal.

To deskphone or to not deskphone?

Reading some of the points above, you may be thinking ‘well why do I still need a desk phone’?. It might be tempting to ditch the desk phone altogether but remember that old habits die hard. While the workplace is shifting and beginning to adopt more and more technologies, there are still a large chunk of people in every organisation that feel more comfortable with a phone on their desk as opposed to the phone in their pocket.

You might be reading this and thinking to yourself ‘well where does this leave us with regards to desk phones?’.

Hold on …

We too thought that the desk phone was only just holding on to the line, but then something entered our world that changed everything. When tasked with finding the next best telephony solution, at times it felt like we were trying to reinvent the wheel a bit.
