Is Your Charity Prepared for a Cyber Attack?

by | Jul 25, 2017 | Archived Articles

When it comes to cyber security, not for profit organisations need be proactive and preventative when it comes to protecting themselves, due to the sensitive nature of the data they hold.

Like any organisation that relies heavily on technology, cyber crime has become a huge concern for not for profits – as they are constantly at risk of cyberattack, theft and data loss.

This begs the question, are not for profit organisations prepared against cyber attacks?

A survey undertaken by specialist insurer Markel, Third Sector Insight questioned over 200 senior charity employees on how prepared their organisations are, these were some of their findings:

  • 54% of respondents didn’t know or said their charity was not well equipped to fend off a cyber security attack
  • When asked whether their charity had any cyber security support, 43% said they did, 33% said they didn’t and 24% didn’t know
  • Only 1 third of those questioned said they updated their software weekly, and another third were unaware.
  • A measly 38% of respondents claimed to have a plan in place in the event of a cyber-attack against their organisation.

When faced with these statistics, it’s apparent that there isn’t enough focus on cyber security within the not for profit sector – and in the growing world of technology, this needs to change.

What can you do to protect your organisation?

  • Train your team! Most cyber criminals manage to infiltrate their target’s systems due to human error, make sure your teams know what to look for
  • Have a backup in place Your data is so important to your organisation, backing it up on a regular basis gives you a safety net in the event of a cyber attack
  • Be Proactive Ensure that you implement a safe password policy and that your software systems are always up to date
  • Ignorance is NOT bliss Just because it hasn’t happened yet, doesn’t mean it won’t – make sure you’re prepared
