How do I even begin looking for a new IT Support Provider?

by | Jul 28, 2017 | Archived Articles

I am sure you receive a number of emails and calls from IT Support Providers on a daily basis, saying they are different, they really care, they are the best at what they do. With varying messages from, ‘everything can be done remotely, that is the way the world is going’ to ‘you must have on-site time, remote helpdesks are too impersonal’. How do you know who to believe, who to put your trust in looking after, arguably, the most important aspect of your business?

There is no real answer to solve this apart from getting to know the team you will be working with, understanding the company and building the trust you need to have in them.

The steps to take when researching IT Support Providers:

  • On-line research: Case studies are a great way of making sure a company knows what they are doing, are these regularly updated, are there more than 1 or 2.
  • Testimonials: Ask to see testimonials from current clients or even speak to existing clients for referrals, make sure they are local to you.
  • Certifications and Awards: Do they have the relevant certifications that your business would expect, these should be easily accessible on the website. Have they received awards and accolades within the industry?
  • Partners: Who do they partner with, within the industry, Microsoft etc. What level of partnership do they have as this will afford you added benefits, from discounts to support.
  • Local: Are they close enough to get to you quickly and easily in case of emergency?
  • Resource: Are there enough people within the business to give you the time your business needs?
  • Longevity: How long has the business been around? 20 years or 2 years. Do they have the experience you would want when it comes to looking after your infrastructure?
  • Face to face: Most importantly a face to face meeting before committing to a company is the best way to get to know and understand their business. Be prepared to ask questions, make sure they also have an understanding of your needs.

As long as you are happy with the information you have found there should be no reason why you cannot have a long and happy relationship with your chosen IT Provider.
