ZCryptor: The Self-Propagating Ransomware You Need To Know About

by | Jun 15, 2016 | Archived Articles

As if ransomware wasn’t already bad enough, Microsoft is warning users of a self-propagating malware strain known as ZCryptor.

ZCryptor can replicate itself and infect additional computers via USB drives (haven’t we already convinced you those are bad?) and network drives. According to an alert from Microsoft, the strain exhibits worm-like behavior and replicates from one drive to another. The threat is spread through email, macro malware, or fake installers like a Flash Player setup.

According to Softpedia, ZCryptor has targeted over 100 different file types, with a ransom demand of roughly £346.

Microsoft has provided some tips to help protect users, here a few to get your started:

  • Keep antivirus up-to-date and upgrade to Windows 10
  • Regularly back up your files
  • Beware of phishing emails, spam, and clicking malicious attachment
  • Disable the loading of macros in your Office programs
